Food Security Resources
Following the formation of the GSA through a referendum last fall, and its formation this spring, we are currently in the process of re-negotiating the provision of several services to graduate students through the SUO. We would like to thank the SUO for continuing service provision for graduate students from January up to this point and are very grateful for their ongoing support throughout this process!
If you are a graduate student at UBC Okanagan, you may be affected by the termination of the following food-related services:
- Food Hampers – as of August 1st, 2026
- SUO Pantry – as of August 31st, 2026
Explore the resources below to learn more about on-campus, off-campus, and emergency resources you can access and how the GSA can support you with your needs.
On-Campus Resources
PICNIC (UNC 122B)
Picnic has free or low-cost food available, and all students are welcome regardless of their financial situation. Picnic provides food skill workshops, cooking classes, free breakfast (weekdays 8:30 – 10:30am), a weekly community meal (Tuesdays 12:00-1:30pm), hosts the community market and offers free consultations with a dietitian. Important note: Picnic will be closed until the end of August. The listed services will be limited until the beginning of the next term.
Off-Campus Resources
Food banks are open to any graduate student and are free of charge. All food banks have a comprehensive hamper program. You need to register with the foodbank in your jurisdiction:
Emergency Services
If you find yourself in a food emergency, please reach out to either of the following:
- Picnic: via campus.wellness@ubc.ca; the Campus Wellness team can connect you to emergency resources.
- GSA Board: via gsa.ubco@gmail.com; we will be in touch to connect you to existing services and can talk you through options.
- UBC Emergency Funding: In emergency situations (including food insecurity), UBC provides funding (does not need to be repaid); you can find the contact form link in our Linktree.
